1. Overview

I formally assumed leadership of FICSAP, following confirmation in the role at the IFAA General Assembly meeting at Gwangju, Korea, in September 2024.  The following months were spend reaching out to FICSAP members, renewing my acquaintance with them and soliciting ideas towards the next strategic plan.

During 2025, FICSAP made some progress towards formulating and advancing its strategic priorities, strengthening engagement with anatomists from member associations, and enhancing support for emergent and mid-career anatomists. Activities undertaken throughout the year included strategic planning, continued IFAA President’s Emergent Anatomists Programme (PEAP) seminars, and organizing network opportunities for members at conferences.

2. Activities and Achievements

2.1 Mentorship and Professional Development

A mentorship session for young anatomists was organized by PEAP during the IFAA Congress in Korea in September 2024. This session formed part of ongoing efforts to support early‑career members. Feedback from participants has continued to inform future programming.

Leadership of PEAP has transitioned from Carol Hartmann to two co-Chairs – Isabel Adrados Moran, Assistant Professor at the Department of Anatomy and Embryology, University Complutense of Madrid, Spain, and Kutlwano Xulu, Lecturer, School of Anatomical Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. Under their leadership, PEAP has maintained an active presence at both IFAA and ISMS congresses (September 2024 and June 2025 respectively). Mentorship and networking opportunities for emergent anatomists were implemented within the conference schedule at these two scientific meetings. Planning was also initiated for additional networking opportunities to be offered at the 22nd IFAA Congress in Melbourne, Australia in August 2026.

2.2 Strategic Planning

The Committee met in May 2025 to consider and agree upon its five‑year strategic plan. The draft plan included, among several other items:

  • The undertaking of focus groups at major meetings to explore the types of support required by individuals belonging to member associations.
  • The maintenance of an up‑to‑date repository of resources (or link to such resources) on the FICSAP page of the IFAA website.

Additionally, extensive discussion was held concerning the potential of growing IFAA membership base from anatomical societies in Latin America and other Spanish‑speaking regions. Effective strategies for strengthening engagement with these communities were considered.

As a first step, it was suggested that a Spanish language version of the IFAA website, including the FICSAP page, be maintained. In support of this proposal, a Spanish translation of the FICSAP page—prepared by Dr. Isabel Adrados Moran, PEAP Co‑Lead—has been included in this report (Report Appendix) for consideration by the IFAA Executive Committee.

2.3 Partnerships and Collaborative Agreements

The expiry date for the collaboration agreement between Flinders University, Australia and the IFAA was extended from 10 April to 31 December 2025. The IFAA–Flinders project evaluation report is currently pending completion and publication.

3. Future Directions for 2026

Efforts will continue in 2026 toward implementing FICSAP’s short‑ and medium‑term strategic goals. The Committee’s first meeting for the year is currently being scheduled for April 2026, to review progress towards the strategic plan, and to establish priorities for the upcoming year.
