The IFAA President’s Emergent Anatomist Programme was initiated by Prof Beverley Kramer and launched at the 2019 IFAA Congress, London. The Programme aims to support the development of emergent anatomists by facilitating opportunities and programmes to develop their skills and expertise as they grow their professional networks and identities.

Activities

2019

The Programme was launched at a Symposium at the IFAA Congress, London, 2019. Please see the Post-hoc abstract for a report of the Symposium.

2020/ 2021

An Introduction to Scientific Writing Workshops were planned for the Anatomical Society of Southern Africa and International Symposium on Morphological Sciences meetings in 2020. Unfortunately, these could not take place due to the COVID pandemic. However, a virtual Introduction to Scientific Writing workshop was facilitated by Prof Beverley Kramer, Prof Jose Sanudo, Dr Erin Hutchinson, and Dr Carol Hartmann at the Anatomical Society of Southern Africa conference in April 2021.

In addition, PEAP supported a virtual round table discussion on the importance of mentoring emergent anatomists at the Brazilian Students Congress, II CONLAAH, July 2021.

2022

Additional Introduction to Scientific Writing workshops were held in May, August and October 2022. These workshops had between 10 and 20 participants, predominantly from the Middle East, Eastern Europe and Africa.

A virtual panel discussion on career opportunities and the future of the anatomical sciences was co-organised and hosted with the postgraduate student representatives at the Anatomical Society of Southern Africa Conference, April 2022.

A panel discussion providing information for emergent anatomists on ways in which they can establish a professional profile was hosted at the IFAA Congress, August 2022.

2023

In addition to continuing with the Introduction to Scientific Writing workshops in May and October 2023, PEAP launched a monthly webinar from March 2023. Included topics aim to develop skills such as abstract writing amongst emergent anatomists, as well as provide an opportunity to consider innovative topics in anatomical sciences research and education. A full list of topics is provided in the appendix.

A speed mentoring session was held at the 2023 International Symposium on Morphological Sciences, Cape Town.  The session was greatly enjoyed by all and gave participants an opportunity to network and engage with senior anatomists around career guidance and opportunities in the anatomical sciences.

2024

The monthly webinars have continued, with breaks planned over the summer and Christmas holidays.

In addition, PEAP will be hosting a speed networking lunch time session at the 2024 IFAA Congress in Korea, Co-Chaired by Prof Beverley Kramer and Prof Erin Hutchinson.

Due to decreased uptake of the Introduction to Scientific Writing workshops in 2023, we have decided to wait to run the next workshop in 2025.

In addition, PEAP has assisted the Chilean Society of Anatomists to plan an event for their conference in October 2024. The event will focus on Scientific writing and the use of AI tools for non-native English speakers, to assist Chilean anatomists to engage with publishing and scientific projects in the English speaking world.
